Teresa Castillo is an award-winning Maltese American documentary filmmaker who grew up between Detroit, Michigan and Buffalo, New York. She creates intimate, character-driven films that center women, explore the complexities of family and community dynamics and illuminate urgent issues such as climate change and immigration.
Her film, "I'll Find a Way or Make One — A Rosie Story" premiered at the Buffalo International Film Festival in 2022, where it won Best Film in its category. The film went on to earn multiple festival honors and is now streaming on PBS. In addition to her producing role at New Jersey PBS, she produced Grit and Grace, a PBS documentary highlighting the often-overlooked women of the American Revolution.
Teresa has also produced documentary work for the Bronx Documentary Center and Brut America, contributing to short-form and long-form projects that amplify underrepresented voices and engage national audiences.
She earned her MFA in Documentary Filmmaking from the City College of New York in 2025. Her thesis film, "Ashes to the Eyes," won Best Cinematography at the CityVisions Film Festival in New York City and was named a finalist by the Environmental Media Association for its powerful climate-change storytelling. It screened at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival in Montana, in their Academy Award-qualifying short program, in 2026, where it was nominated for Best Mini Doc.
She is based in Boulder, Colorado.
